about the welding program

This course is designed to train students to qualify to an American Welding Society (AWS) code. The course will explore basic welding processes and procedures, safety, interpretations of blueprints/shop drawings, metallurgy, different fabrication tools, different welding qualifications, procedure qualification, OFC/OFW, SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welding.

Tuition $2,750
GI Bill ® funding approved. For all other candidates, tuition is FREE through the DOL funded America’s Promise Grant. NOTE: A $200 charge to cover administrative costs plus a $200 material fee will be collected upon registration.

144 hours

Hours of Instruction
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays, 5:00pm - 9:00pm
This course is also offered on 19 Saturdays from 8am – 3:30pm

Completion of enrollment documents. Students must be at least 15 years of age.

  • OFC/OFW (oxyfuel cutting/oxyfuel welding)
  • SMAW (shielded metal arc welding)
  • GMAW (gas metal arc welding)
  • FCAW (flux core arc welding)
  • GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding)
  • In addition to the topics listed above, students will receive a significant amount of hands-on training

after course completion


Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment from MiraCosta College and test to qualify to an AWS code.

meet your instructor

William Gordon Owler - Welding I InstructorWilliam Gordon Owler

William has almost 27 years of experience in the welding industry, including sales, fabrication, and design. He is AWS CWSR Certified Welding Sales Representative. Although the majority of his time has been in sales, he has had numerous side jobs as a welder. In addition, he has worked closely with customers to improve their processes, using a variety of different welding tools and equipment.


Nick Scott - Welding I AWS CertifierNick Scott

Nick has been in the welding industry for over 7 years as a quality control manager and inspector. He holds his AWS CWI and consults for new contracts in regards to welder qualifications and welding procedures. He has been acting QC for LA City Certified Fabricator with MWS/Sheet Steel/Reinforcing endorsements.
