about the welding program

Designed to train students to qualify for an American Welding Society (AWS) code, this 132-hour course will explore basic welding processes and procedures, safety, interpretations of blueprints/shop drawings, metallurgy, fabrication tools, welding qualifications and procedure qualification. In addition, students will receive a significant amount of hands-on training in: Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), and Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW).

Hours of Instruction
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays, 5:00pm - 9:00pm
This course is also offered on 19 Saturdays from 8am – 3:30pm

Completion of enrollment documents. Students must be at least 15 years of age.

Students who successfully complete this course will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment from MiraCosta College and test to qualify to an AWS code.

meet your instructor

William Gordon Owler - Welding I InstructorWilliam Gordon Owler

William has almost 27 years of experience in the welding industry, including sales, fabrication, and design. He is AWS CWSR Certified Welding Sales Representative. Although the majority of his time has been in sales, he has had numerous side jobs as a welder. In addition, he has worked closely with customers to improve their processes, using a variety of different welding tools and equipment.


Nick Scott - Welding I AWS CertifierNick Scott

Nick has been in the welding industry for over 7 years as a quality control manager and inspector. He holds his AWS CWI and consults for new contracts in regards to welder qualifications and welding procedures. He has been acting QC for LA City Certified Fabricator with MWS/Sheet Steel/Reinforcing endorsements.

Tiffany - Welding I AWS CertifierTiffany Orff

Tiffany began her career over 8 years ago as a welding apprentice for a custom welding and fabrication shop out of Riverside, Ca. Attended Arkansas State University and graduated with her AAS in Welding Technology which also included a state gold medal in welding/fabrication in the Skills USA competition. AWS certified In SMAW, GMAW, FCAW. She also earned the opportunity to use her certifications to do structural welding for an AirGas contract. Tiffany has also held mommy & me classes to encourage more women and youth into the STEM field. She has recently moved back to California to pursue her career as a welding instructor.
