about the electronic assembly course

The purpose of this course is to provide the necessary training for students to become an electronic assembler at an advanced manufacturing company. Students will work towards IPC J-STD-001 certification. In addition, students will learn the role of production in the manufacturing system and how certain skill sets such as reading and analyzing acceptance criteria, testing, documentation, and soldering are integral to the job.

Tuition $1,800
Tuition is FREE through the DOL funded America’s Promise Grant. NOTE: A $220 charge to cover administrative costs will be collected upon registration.

Hours of Instruction
Sundays, 9:00am-2:00pm.

Prerequisites
Completion of enrollment documents.
Students must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Soldering through-hole and surface mount single lead/multi-lead components
  • Soldering multi-pin IC chips
  • Measuring and cutting wire
  • Trimming insulation, crimping, connectorizing, molding and insulating connector ends
  • Wrapping, bundling, shielding, insulating and security cable harnesses
  • Mounting modules, components, connectors, cables, and harnesses into chassis

after course completion

Certifications

If you successfully complete this course, you will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment from MiraCosta College and an IPC certification.

Scott Hannum - Soldering InstructorScott Hannum
Electronic Assembly Instructor

Scott Hannum began his career in the US Navy, coordinating the training of sailors who conduct the operation and maintenance of self-defense systems, as well as developed and managed a fleet wide training program for the High Voltage Power Distribution System. Since he retired from the Navy, he has been the Manufacturing Manager at CarrierComm Inc. and the Production Supervisor at ViaSat Inc. He currently coordinates the operation and process for the assembly of electro-mechanical parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies, as well as developing the technical skills of the assembly staff.

Soldering Certification Instructor

David also began his career in the US Navy. He was an Avionics Technician and moved up to shop supervisor and Collateral Duty Inspector/Quality Assurance. He has worked at United Space Alliance as an aerospace Quality Assurance Inspector, and at Ball Aerospace & Technologies as a RF Engineer Technician, PCB Designer, and Process Control Engineer. David currently works at ViaSat as a Manufacturing Engineer.
